Water - Try to have a reliable water source with filtration capabilities. Many experts say that you need 6 gallons of water per day to survive, I have to disagree. I have found that you can easily survive on one gallon of water per day , per person in most moderate climates. Please calculate pets separately, most full sized dogs will need a gallon per day.
Dry goods - Beans and Rice are an excellent long term source of food to begin your preparations. A couple cups of rice can fill a hungry belly up in a long term situation. I like to buy 25 pound bags of rice, you can feed yourself for a long time with one bag of rice.
Medicine - Try to have extra medicines on hand to help sustain you through a crisis. It is a good idea to have extra medicines on hand to last you through a 3 - 6 month time period. This will help insure that if any medical need should occur and access to a doctor is not available that you can doctor yourself. I have found that Zinc, Multivitamins and Vitamin D help with fighting off the Corona Virus.
Security - Know your surroundings and be vigilant to be able to recognize a threat if it should occur. Have a means to defend yourself, this could be as simple as a baseball bat or a stun gun if not comfortable with firearms.
Communications - Have a means of communication and know how to use it. There are many ways to communicate for help if you should find yourself in distress. I have found that having multiple cell phones through different providers helps, I have also found that CB radio is a great way to communicate along with short range walkie-talkies and having a satellite phone could be a great asset to have in a long term grid down situation.
Plan - Have a mental plan before a crisis should occur and know how to use your plan. Try to practice your plan at least once a month.
